Go Back Hen and Chicks Green Wheel

Sempervivum 'Green Wheel'
Deer Resistant IconRock Garden Icon

Plant Type: Perennials

Large rosettes of bright, lime green medium leaves form neat wheels with their smaller offspring tucked around them in a tight circle.  In late spring to early summer older rosettes may send up a single flower stalk.  These are topped with branched clusters of five-petaled pink blooms.  After flowering, the mother plant dies to make room for the offsets.

Growing & Maintenance Tips:

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.  This is the perfect alpine for sun drenched, elevated rock gardens with well-drained sandy gravelly soil. They don't ask for deep soils but prefer extreme drainage, which helps these cold hardy plants withstand winter moisture. Offsets may become quite crowded in alpine rock gardens. If this happens they are easy to move. Simply sever and dig any unwanted chicks and plant them elsewhere to create whole new colonies. Plant in shallow stone troughs, rocky crevices or on green roofs among other drought tolerant, low-growing succulents.
